MELBOURNE: Defending champions United States are out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sweden upset the US in the pre-quarters. With this win, Sweden reached the quarter-finals. In another match, Netherlands also reached the quarter-finals by defeating South Africa.
Sweden overthrew the US in a sudden death match at the Melbourne Stadium. The match went to a penalty shootout following both teams failed to score in regulation time and extra time. In the shootout, both teams were tied at 3-3. Andy Sullivan, Lindsay Horan and Christy Mewis scored for the US and Fridolina Rolfo, Elin Rubenson and Hannah Bennison scored for Sweden.
Alyssa Nehar and Magdalena Erickson scored for the US in sudden death. With this the score became 4-4. But US’s Kelly O’Hara missed the seventh kick.
