Sweden officially joins NATO

As of this Thursday, Sweden is officially part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), being the 32nd member of the group. The event took place almost two years after the Nordic nation requested its accession.

To formalize membership in NATO, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is in Washington to sign the necessary documentation.

In 2022, Sweden applied to join Finland; However, it had to wait a little longer after the aforementioned, approved territory and with the welcome to the alliance in April 2023.

The extra ten months of waiting was due to the opposition of both Hungary and Türkiye.

However, approval by the Turkish Parliament took around 20 months, while diplomatic efforts from Hungary were greater.

Oscar Jonsson, researcher at the Swedish Defense Universityspoke about the country’s entry into NATO, especially about the scenario in which the territory was seen due to the lack of approval for almost two years: “If you look only at recent empirical data, you can see that Russia has invaded two states that it perceived to be on the path to joining NATO.”.

The expert indicated that, although Russia It has targeted certain territories, it has never dared to touch member countries of the alliance.
