Sweden and Finland will jointly present their candidacy to join NATO on Wednesday.
The Finnish Parliament voted on Tuesday in favor of membership by more than 95%, beyond expectations.
In Stockholm, the Swedish Prime Minister received Finnish President Sauli Niinisto to announce this common approach:
“Sweden and Finland agree to move forward hand in hand throughout this process, said Magdalena Andersson, and tomorrow we are going to apply together for NATO. It is a strong signal to show that we will be united in the future”.
The Russian threat precipitated the decision of these two countries.
But Turkey is obstructing membership, which requires the unanimity of the 30 members of NATO. Ankara criticizes the attitude of these Scandinavian nations vis-à-vis the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the PKK, Turkey’s pet peeve.
