Morocco recalled, on Wednesday, the King’s Ambassador to Stockholm, following the burning of the Koran, authorized by the Swedish police, announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Sweden in Rabat was also summoned by Moroccan diplomacy to be served with “the strongest condemnation by the Kingdom of Morocco of this offense and the rejection of this inadmissible act”.

“The Swedish government, once once more, authorized a demonstration which took place today, during which the Holy Koran was burned in front of a Mosque in Stockholm”, deplore the Moroccan authorities for whom “this new offensive act and irresponsible ignores the feelings of more than a billion Muslims, in this sacred period of the great pilgrimage to Mecca and the blessed festival of Eid Al-Adha”.

The Kingdom believes that “whatever political positions or differences that may exist between countries”, it is “unacceptable that the faith of Muslims should be flouted in this way”.

Denouncing “repetitive provocations, committed under the complacent gaze of the Swedish government”, Rabat said that its Ambassador in Stockholm has been recalled for “consultation” and for an “indefinite period”.

The Foreign Ministry was speaking following an Iraqi-born Swede burned a copy of the Koran outside a mosque in the capital Stockholm, following obtaining permission from local police.

Salwan Momika, 37, threw the Koran on the ground before burning it and making Islamophobic remarks.

Police issued their clearance following a Swedish Court of Appeal ruling in mid-June saying there was no justification for rejecting such requests.
