SWAT: Artificial intelligence flood early warning system installed

WWF Pakistan has been working in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa affected by climate change for the past several years.

Asim Haider from the institute told Independent Urdu that after the 2022 floods, their flood recovery project started in Swat, which included a flood early warning system through artificial intelligence.

According to Asim: ‘Earlier there was no such system in Swat, which could provide timely flood information.’

He further informed that WWF in collaboration with Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute and district administration started work on flood early warning system and system was installed in Kalam, in which cameras, sensors and water gauges were installed.

Asim said that with the help of these devices, the quantity and speed of water in Swat river can be monitored.

‘The data that comes to us will be analyzed by machines and the local administration and relevant departments will be informed about possible threats.’

Ijaz Shinwari, the owner of a hotel in Kalam, told Independent Urdu that 10 rooms of his hotel were affected due to the collapse of the safety valve and bridge in the 2010 flood, while no alert was issued in the 2022 flood. And the danger to the guests was also increased by the water.

He said that the cameras installed in the new system will be very useful. ‘We will get an alert before the flood, due to which we will be able to take timely precautionary measures. If the alert is received before approaching the water, we will be able to evacuate our guests safely and save lives and valuables.’
