Swastika painted on church – Read the story here

On the church door, made of light wood with finely executed carvings, there was painted a large symbol that casts dark and gruesome shadows on National Socialism and Nazi Germany

Although the symbol faces differently than in the original design of the sign, it actually looks like a swastika, which was used as the emblem of the German Nazi Party during the Second World War.

Next to the symbol, the number 28 is also painted. The number symbolizes in Nazi number symbolism the letters “B” and “H”, which is an abbreviation of “Blood & Honour”.

A picture of the church door was shared on the night of Sunday in the Facebook group “Frederikshavn og omegn – Nu og da”, and the vandalism has since triggered many angry reactions from the group’s members.

When Nordjyske contacted the chairman of the parish council in Frederikshavn Church, Egon Olesen, he was initially unaware of the vandalism as he was not near the church. Later in the day, what he knew about the incident was still sparse.

– We are very angry about that, he says and points out that the vandalism is not necessarily directly aimed at the church.

– After all, Frederikshavn Church is the one that the municipality also perceives as the city’s monument. It could easily be something like this completely ordinary madman’s work or an urge to destroy. It’s not certain, it matters that it’s the church, says Egon Olesen.

According to the chairman, he will report the vandalism to the police first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, there is no surveillance at the church that can reveal the perpetrator.

Parish priest in Frederikshavn Church Inger Due Borré calls the vandalism shameful, but cannot comment further on the case.

Nordjyske has tried in vain to get in touch with the church office.

Although the points of the cross on the church door are bent to the left, it is confusingly similar to the right-handed swastika used as the emblem of the German Nazi Party. Photo: Henrik Bo
