The news of human drug addiction is common, but have you heard of swan addiction? Recently, an unprecedented “swan poisoning incident” occurred in Slovakia. Since February this year, more than 200 swans have been flying to a local poppy field to feed. This group of “addicts” can’t leave the flower fields at all. Dozens of swans even died of overdose or lost the ability to fly, causing headaches for farmers.

according toNews18According to a report, a farmer in southern Slovakia discovered that their poppy field was occupied by dozens of swans. They have hardly left since February, and the number has increased, even exceeding 200 at one point. What is the reason behind the behavior? It turns out that these birds have become veritable “addicts”.

Local farmer Balints Pam also pointed out that “except for the seeds, the entire poppy pod is poisonous.” He suspected that the swans were initially attracted by the field puddles after the heavy rain for food and drinking, but the results were not correct. Shen confuses poppies with rapeseeds and becomes addicted to drugs, which also causes swans to lose their ability to fly due to general paralysis, and even makes them a target for predators.

In this regard, experts also warned that poppies are poisonous to swans. Even eating a small amount of poppies can cause poisoning, not to mention the risk of death from overdose. Dozens of swans have died so far. Special personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene to catch the geese, and the remaining nearly 150 swans were sent for detoxification.

In addition, these adult swans weighing up to 14 kilograms have eaten up to 5 hectares of poppies in the past 4 months and caused economic losses of up to 10,000 euros. Although the swan is a conservation bird in Slovakia, it is not included in the list of national compensation species. Neither the insurance company nor the government will provide compensation, which also leaves the affected farmers with no way to claim compensation.
