“Swallow me up, earth!” Artists who sing everything except their countries’ national anthem

Regarding the critique of Karol G’s rendition of the Colombian national anthem during the America Cup, as well as Ingrid Andress’ admission of being intoxicated while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the MLB Home Run Derby, it is important to note that other artists have faced similar backlash.

Fans of Latin American football expressed that they might not hear Karol G’s voice during the TV broadcast and found it difficult to understand in the video shared on the Copa América Instagram account. They even suggested that she should refrain from singing without autotune in the future.

On the other hand, Ingrid Andress was accused of butchering the United States’ national anthem.

“I am entering a facility today to seek the help I need,” Andress shared in an Instagram post. She further added, “It wasn’t me last night. I apologize to MLB, all fans, and this beloved country for that performance.”

However, Karol G and Andress are not the only artists who have faced criticism for their rendition of the national anthem. Similar incidents have occurred with Cecilia Gil, Fergie, Christina Aguilera, Jaime Camil, Maria Leon, Ana Barbara, Vicente Fernandez, Luis Ramirez, Julio Preciado, Angela Aguilar, Taylor Swift, and Steven Tyler.

In the Dominican Republic, singer Henya Tejeda apologized following forgetting a line of the National Anthem during a baseball game between the Bulls of the East and the Cibao Eagles in November 2022, attributing it to nerves.

Cecilia Gil faced criticism during the Caribbean Series Margarita 2014 in Venezuela for not singing the Dominican national anthem properly, unlike Adalgisa Pantaleon, Ruby Perez, Hector Acosta, and Manny Cruz who delivered impeccable performances.

Fergie has also faced backlash for her rendition of the United States anthem. In 2018, she received ridicule for a less conventional version with unexpected vocal choices.

Christina Aguilera faced scrutiny for altering a verse of the national anthem during the XLV Super Bowl in 2011, while both Taylor Swift and Steven Tyler have been criticized for their performances of the anthem.

Jaime Camil made a lyrical mistake in the American national anthem during the Echopark Automotive Grand Prix, and Martha Sanchez was booed during a performance of the Spanish national anthem.

Various Mexican artists have also been criticized for their renditions of the national anthem, including Ángela Aguilar, Coque Muñiz, Luis Ramírez, Julio Preciado, Vicente Fernández, Ana Bárbara, and María León.

When it comes to performances of national anthems by artists, there have been several instances of criticism and controversy. Recently, singers like Karol G and Ingrid Andress faced backlash for their interpretations of the national anthems of Colombia and the United States, respectively. However, they are not the only ones who have come under fire for their renditions of national anthems.

In the world of Latin American football, Karol G’s performance of the Colombian national anthem during the Copa América was heavily criticized by fans who felt that her voice was not properly heard. Similarly, Ingrid Andress admitted to being drunk while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the MLB Home Run Derby, leading to a public apology and acknowledgment of the mistake.

These incidents are not isolated cases, as many other artists have faced similar criticism for their renditions of national anthems. From Christina Aguilera to Steven Tyler, artists have been attacked for forgetting lyrics, singing out of tune, or making other mistakes while performing national anthems.

In the Dominican Republic, singer Henya Tejeda faced criticism for forgetting a line of the National Anthem during a baseball game, attributing it to nerves. Similarly, Venezuelan singer Cecilia Gil struggled to sing the Dominican national anthem correctly during the Caribbean Series Margarita 2014 in Venezuela.

Internationally, artists like Fergie, Taylor Swift, and Jaime Camil have also faced backlash for their performances of national anthems. Fergie’s rendition of the United States anthem at a soccer match in 2018 received ridicule for its unconventional vocal style, while Taylor Swift has been criticized for having a weak voice for such a challenging song.

In Mexico, artists like Vicente Fernández, Ana Bárbara, and Angela Aguilar have been accused of changing the tone or “Americanizing” the country’s national anthem, leading to public outcry and controversy.

Overall, performances of national anthems by artists can be a sensitive subject, as they represent the pride and identity of a nation. While some artists have been praised for their flawless renditions, others have faced criticism and backlash for their mistakes or unconventional interpretations. In the end, it’s essential for artists to approach such performances with respect, preparation, and understanding of the significance of the national anthem they are singing.
