– It was an honor for me to welcome Tikhanovskaja again. She is a fearless leader of the democratic opposition in Belarus, says parliamentary president Gharahkhani in a press release.

He further says that Norway and the Storting support the democracy movement in Belarus which is being persecuted by Lukashenko’s authoritarian regime.

– Although the situation in Ukraine rightly takes a lot of our attention, it is important to remember that the Belarusian people also live in very difficult conditions, says the president of the Storting.

The meetings gave the Norwegian politicians the opportunity to hear Tikhanovskaja’s views on recent developments in Belarus. She currently lives in exile in Lithuania.

– It always makes a strong impression to meet Tikhanovskaja, who pays a high personal price for her fight for freedom and democracy in Belarus. The situation in Belarus is getting worse and more serious, especially for those who oppose Lukashenko, says the head of the foreign affairs and defense committee, Ine Eriksen Søreide (H), in the press release.

During his visit to Oslo, the opposition leader will also meet Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) and Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (Ap), among others.

Tikhanovskaja will also be a speaker at the Words Matter conference organized by the Oslo Centre.
