The car, familiar to us under the name Geely Coolray, is sold in the home market of China under the local name Geely Binyue. Last year, a large-scale updated Geely Binyue Cool SUV debuted there, however, the pre-reform version also remained in service. In the Chinese auto industry, the production of two (or even more) versions of the same car is practiced everywhere. But now the basic Geely Binyue has undergone a separate upgrade!
However, there were very few visible changes. Compared to the 2021 version, only the grille (now with vertical bars), wheel design and small decor have changed. Cars with a sports package have a more modest spoiler on the fifth door. The overall length remained the same (4330 mm), while the Binyue Cool with a different plumage has 4380 mm.
In the cabin, there are even fewer changes – only a different upholstery and a more modest color decor. Saved and basic analog devices, and an optional seven-inch screen in the instrument cluster, and a choice of two media systems (screen diagonal of 8.0 or 12.3 inches, depending on the configuration).
The main new thing is under the hood. Following the Binyue Cool model, the “regular” Geely Binyue acquired a 1.5 four-cylinder turbo engine (181 hp, 290 Nm), developed by a subsidiary of Aurobay, which was formed by the merger of the engine divisions of Volvo and Geely. So now the number of cylinders and pipes of the exhaust system is equal. Paired with this engine is the old seven-speed “robot” with two wet clutches. The basic version retained the 1.4 turbo four (141 hp, 235 Nm) with a six-speed “mechanics”. Drive in any case only front.
In China, sales of updated SUVs have already begun. A Geely Binyue here costs between $10,800 and $13,800, while the Binyue Cool only starts at $14,200. Alas, it is not yet clear when and in what form the updated Coolray will appear in Russia: we still sell cars with three-cylinder engines and the original design of the 2018 sample. And they cost 1.93-2.14 million rubles.
