Hearing canceled due to petition in suspicious package
A suspicious package whose discovery prompted the cancellation of a hearing for the former prime minister’s alleged killer on Monday contained a petition asking for a lenient sentence.
The package contained, according to public broadcaster NHK, a printout of a petition from the Change.org site demanding a lenient sentence for the suspect, which has collected some 13,000 signatures since last year.
He faces the death penalty
“I sent the signatures in the hope that they would be seen by as many interested parties as possible,” the initiator of the petition, whose identity has not been revealed, told NHK. As the whole “was thick and it was raining, I put (the signatures) in cardboard boxes… I never intended to obstruct justice”, added this person, who according to the Kyodo agency itself contacted the police after learning that his package had triggered a security alert. The court and the police refused to confirm this information.
After being declared fit to be tried after a long psychiatric expertise, Tetsuya Yamagami was charged in January with “murder” and violation of the law on arms control. He faces the death penalty if found guilty.
He told investigators he targeted Shinzo Abe because of his alleged ties to the Moon sect, also known as the Unification Church, to which his mother, a devotee, is said to have made huge donations in the past. , leading their family to ruin.
