The “Saudi Cinema” account affiliated with the General Authority for Audiovisual Media said that it will not grant the movie “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” a screening license “unless the production companies commit to implementing the required amendments.”
Out of our keenness on the safety of the content shown in the cinemas, and our responsibility towards the viewers, we would like to point out that we will not permit or license any film that contradicts the content controls in force in the media system. #visualandaudio and its executive regulations, unless the production companies commit to implementing the required amendments.

As for the Emirates Media Council, for its part, it announced its keenness to follow closely, stressing that “any work that violates Emirati values or the standards of media content in force in the country will not be allowed to be shown,” according to the local newspaper, “Emirates Today”.
The movie “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was released on June 2 in America. Despite its limited budget – compared to that category of films – which did not exceed $100 million, the work was able to reap huge and unexpected revenues in American and Canadian cinemas.
The opening revenue of the film amounted to 120.5 million dollars, more than 3 times what the original animated version of 2018 achieved and continued to grow to 405 million so far, which confirmed the sweeping popularity of the work, which will soon double as soon as it is shown around the world.
Despite the film’s global success, Arab activists demanded that “Spider-Man: Acros the Spider-Verse”, which was expected to be shown in Arab theaters on Thursday, June 22, be banned, due to its pro-LGBT expressions and references.
Activists objected to the appearance of the phrase “Protect Transgender Children” engraved over the transgender flag hanging on the wall in the background of one of the scenes, which led some to believe that Gwen Stacy – the main character in the film – is transgender.
The scene comes as part of a recent trend by Hollywood studios to pass implicit and direct messages in support of homosexuals. The movie “Lightyear” was banned from showing in 14 Arab and Islamic countries in 2022.
It is noteworthy that the movie “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is the second part of the animated trilogy centered on the character of Miles Morales, where the events take place in parallel fictional universes and combine adventure and action.
The third and final part is expected to be released next year.
