A food service worker at a Montreal CHSLD was suspended 30 days without pay for eating a donut during her shift in the summer of 2020.

The woman, who had been employed by this establishment for 21 years, felt humiliated and considers that the sanction is exaggerated.
“They were donuts for residents, but there were some left over. So I took a piece and ate it. The assistant chef saw me and told me that I was not allowed to eat in the kitchen (…) Following that, my boss met me,” said the lady who requested anonymity to TVA Nouvelles.

She went on to explain how she had to give her version of the facts to human resources.
“Afterwards I was given a letter that I was suspended for a month for stealing food.”
The attendant, who is now retired, filed a grievance once morest her employer.
Several people contacted TVA Nouvelles following the revelation, by the Journal de Montreal, of the “theft” of a peanut butter toast by a nurse, to report other stories of the kind.
An employee of the Montreal health network was suspended for a month for drinking coffee when his job was “simply” to serve it.
Another employee of the health network would have received a week of suspension following being seen swallowing… a slice of bacon.
In all of these cases, grievances were filed once morest the employers.
