Suspected Trump assassination attempt confessed plans in letter
  • The accused remains under arrest on charges related to weapons possession, but the Prosecutor’s Office plans to add new charges against him.

The suspect of attempt to assassinate former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump on a golf course in Florida (USA) detailed his plans in a letter that the prosecution showed in court by the Department of Justice on September 23.

The text, handwritten by the accused, identified as Ryan Routh, revealed that he wanted to commit the crime and regretted having failed.

“Dear World: This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I am so sorry I failed you,” Routh wrote in the letter prosecutors filed in the motion.

The defendant also added in the text that he was offering $150,000 to anyone who could complete the job.

The letter was found in a box, along with other items including ammunition, that Routh left at a friend’s house months before his arrest, leading prosecutors to presume that he anticipated his failed attempt, although they did not specify this in the motion.

“I did the best I could and gave all the courage I could muster,” the 58-year-old added in the letter.

What was the assassination attempt on Trump like?

On September 15th, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agentwho discovered him armed with a semi-automatic rifle hidden behind some bushes lined up near the sixth hole of the golf course owned by Trump.

The former US president was at that time spending time with a group of friends on a nearby hole of the golf course.

The officer shot the suspect, but he fled the scene without firing his weapon. About 45 minutes later, Routh was stopped by local police while driving a vehicle on an interstate highway.

When FBI agents searched Routh’s hiding place, they found a loaded rifle with a scratched and illegible serial number, a scope, a digital camera, a backpack and a purse.

Revelations of the case

The FBI’s analysis of the detainee’s six cell phones revealed that on August 14 he traveled from North Carolina to West Palm Beach and since then had been hanging around the golf course as well as Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s social club and residence in Florida.

Similarly, a list of sites and events between the months of August and September where Trump was present or was expected to be present was found.

The prosecution gathered this information in a document submitted to the court in order to support the federal magistrate in keeping Routh in custody, who is currently being held on charges related to the possession of weapons, although new charges are expected to be added.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has authorized state prosecutors to launch their own investigation, which could lead to charges of attempted murder against Routh.

This event is the second assassination attempt against former President Trump, after suffering a Attack while holding a rally in Pennsylvania in July, when he was injured in the ear.
