Andrew Lester, suspected of shooting a young African-American man, surrendered to the authorities. This, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, in the state of Missouri.

The young African American, Ralph Yarl, 16 years old, He was shot in the face and arm after he went to the wrong house last Thursday night, when he went to look for his two younger brothers. The owner of the house, Andrew Lester, 84, shot him, seriously wounding him.

Lester was charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action. Clay County District Attorney Zachary Thompson told a news conference that “There was a racial component in the case,” without giving further details.

“He (Ralph Yarl) relives the situation over and over again. And that doesn’t stop my tears because when you see your son there, sitting there, and the tears welling up in his eyes, there’s nothing you can say to him.” The young man’s mother, Cleo Nagbe, said Tuesday in a televised interview.

Nagbe, a nurse with nearly 20 years in the profession, added that her son is recovering surrounded by a professional medical team.

According to documents supporting probable cause for trial, Lester told police that after the doorbell rang, he saw the young man pulling the outside latch. He added that he thought Yarl was trying to get into the house and was “scared to death” because of the young man’s height.

The assault, a crime charged against the suspect in shooting the young African-American man, is a felony and if convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison. The armed criminal action charge carries a sentence of 3 to 15 years in prison.
