Madrid, Aug 19 (EFE).- The Spanish Civil Guard has arrested a 20-year-old Spaniard as the alleged perpetrator of the stabbing that killed an 11-year-old boy in Mocejón (Toledo, central Spain) while he was playing football with other friends, sources close to the case told EFE.
Although not much more information was released, the young man was arrested on Monday afternoon in the town where the incident occurred, after the Civil Guard deployed a large search operation involving a dozen patrol cars and a helicopter.
Police officers are searching and inspecting the municipal canal, where seven patrol cars were deployed and where a large number of local residents are gathered, according to EFE.
Two officers are inside the canal searching with their hands. Some of the residents told EFE that it seems they are looking for the murder weapon in the channel, which has barely a palm’s breadth of muddy water.
The search began after the Civil Guard searched a house that some neighbours claim is owned by the grandparents of the suspect.
The investigation, carried out by the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police, is under confidentiality of proceedings by order of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Toledo, which has taken charge of the case.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the victim, Mateo, was attacked with a sharp object while playing football at the municipal field ‘Ángel Tardío’ with two friends.
Mocejón City Council declared three days of official mourning on Sunday.
The motive for the crime is currently unknown, but it has been ruled out that it was a jihadist terrorist action carried out by a lone actor.
