Gunpowder was found in the house of a suspect in his 20s who threw an explosive at Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during an election campaign.
According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Wakayama prefectural police seized and searched the home of 24-year-old Ryuji Kimura, who threw explosives at Prime Minister Kishida at the site of the by-election campaign for the House of Representatives in Wakayama Prefecture the day before on the 16th.
Kimura’s home is an hour and a half by car from the Saikazaki Fish Market in Wakayama City, the site of the incident.
Prior to the seizure and search that day, residents near the suspect’s home were requested to evacuate.
Prior to this, the police confiscated a 13cm-long knife and a lighter from Kimura’s backpack, which was collected from the scene of the incident.
Local media raised the possibility that Kimura was trying to assault the prime minister in various ways other than explosives, given that various weapons were prepared.
If these allegations are accepted, the charge of attempted murder might be added to the charge of obstruction of business currently applied to Kimura.
Kimura did not say anything at the time of his arrest, and is known to have exercised his right to remain silent following his arrest, asking for a lawyer to be called.
Family members are said to have told police that Kimura had stayed at home for the past several years without a regular job.
