US judicial authorities announced that Ryan Routh, the suspect in trying to shoot presidential candidate Donald Trump in Florida, was charged on Tuesday with attempting to assassinate the former president.

Roth, 58, appeared Monday before a judge in South Florida, where he was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon with a serial number erased.

That day, prosecutors announced they intended to seek an additional charge against Roth, which was the attempted assassination of the Republican billionaire.

Roth was arrested while trying to flee by car from the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach on September 15.

A Secret Service agent shot him after spotting a gun barrel in the trees surrounding the golf course, according to government documents filed in court.

The Justice Department said in a statement that the new indictment was issued late Tuesday afternoon by a “grand jury” in Miami, Florida (southeast).

The case was randomly assigned to Judge Ellen Cannon, who in July ruled in favor of the former Republican president in another case.

Three additional charges were added to the first two counts: attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, possession of a firearm with intent to commit a violent crime, and assault on a federal agent.

A federal judge on Monday ordered Roth to remain in custody.
