## A City on Edge: Interview with Dr.Emily Carter on NYC Subway Safety
**[Archyde News Intro Music]**
**Host: ** Good evening, and welcome back to Archyde News. We’re covering a tragic incident that has shaken the city. This week, a young woman lost her life in a horrific arson attack on a subway train in Brooklyn, highlighting the ongoing concerns about subway safety in New York. We’re joined by Dr. Emily Carter, a sociologist specializing in urban violence and public safety, to discuss this tragedy and the broader context of safety on the New York City subway.Welcome to the show, Dr. Carter.
**Dr. Carter:** Thank you for having me.It’s a truly heartbreaking situation, and my thoughts go out to the victim’s family.
**Host:** This is the second incident involving violence on the subway this week, following a fatal stabbing on Wednesday. What do you think these incidents say about the overall climate of safety on the subway system?
**Dr. Carter:** This is a complex issue. While New York City has seen an overall decrease in crime, incidents like these are highly visible and understandably cause fear and anxiety. there’s a perception of vulnerability when riding the subway, and events like this fuel that sense of insecurity.
**Host:** Governor Hochul recently announced plans to bolster subway safety with increased National Guard presence and security cameras. Do you think these measures will be effective?
**Dr. Carter:** It’s crucial to acknowledge that there’s no single solution to this problem. Increased security measures can definitely help increase deterrence, but they don’t address the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to violence.
**Host:** What are some of those underlying factors?
**Dr. Carter:** We have to acknowledge the complex interplay of issues like poverty, mental health challenges, and lack of opportunities. We need a multi-pronged approach that includes not only law enforcement but also social services and community engagement.
**Host:** What kind of social services and community engagement would be most effective?
**Dr. Carter:** Investing in mental health and addiction programs, creating job opportunities, and fostering community involvement can make a real difference. Additionally, addressing homelessness and providing stable housing can considerably reduce tension and vulnerable situations on the subway.
**Host:** Some people argue that increased policing is the only solution to subway violence. What’s your response to that?
**Dr. Carter:** Relying solely on increased policing can be counterproductive. It can lead to over-policing and criminalization of marginalized communities without addressing the root causes of violence. A more holistic approach is crucial for creating a truly safe and equitable transportation system.
**Host:** Dr. Carter, thank you for sharing your insights and expertise. This is a critical conversation for New yorkers and for cities everywhere facing challenges with public safety.
**Dr. carter:** Thank you. It’s essential to keep these conversations going and to work towards solutions that prioritize both safety and justice.
