Susi Air Pilot Release Has Not Impacted Papua Conflict Resolution

Researcher from the Indonesian Institute for Defense and Strategic Studies, Beni Sukadis, said that efforts to free Susi Air Pilot Philip Mark Mehrtens did not have a significant impact on resolving the conflict in Papua.

This is because the root of the problem has not been handled properly by the government responsible for politics, economics and security.

One important instrument that can be used is through peaceful dialogue between the conflicting parties, such as the Free Papua Movement (OPM) and the Indonesian Government.

“During a decade of President Jokowi’s administration, there has been no seriousness from the government in opening up a peaceful dialogue space with key stakeholders in Papua, including the OPM, church, youth, and civil society. This shows that the resolution of the Papuan conflict is still stagnant,” said Beni, contacted on Sunday (22/9).

To address the Papua conflict more comprehensively, a comprehensive evaluation of the security and political approaches currently implemented by the government is required.

This evaluation, he stressed, is not only important for the current government, but also for the future government under the leadership of President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

“Without an in-depth evaluation of the approaches that have been implemented, it will be very difficult to resolve the roots of the conflict that has been going on for decades,” said Beni.

The security-based approach must be balanced with a more holistic solution, including a social and cultural approach, which involves all elements of Papuan society, especially influential figures from informal figures, youth and the church in the process.

It is important to elect a special envoy, from trusted people at the national and local levels, on the Papua issue as a good intention in resolving the problems in Papua.

“In addition, a number of past human rights issues must be resolved through reconciliation through dialogue with Papuan figures and even other political concessions that can generate trust from the Papuan people,” said Beni. (P-5)
