Susana Arrechea, the Guatemalan scientist who educates about gender with technology

Barcelona (Spain), Jul 10 (EFE).- Guatemalan scientist and creator of Digital Community Centers in indigenous communities in her country without access to electricity, Susana Arrechea, has highlighted “the social value” of the project, which began as a technological project but has enabled education on gender issues and the integration of women and men.

“The biggest impact is not only access to the internet, electricity or digital skills, but the change in the perspective of women and girls, who are beginning to participate in decision-making,” said the researcher, winner of the 2024 Princess of Girona Award, in an interview with EFE.

“We don’t just teach digital skills, but also leadership skills to women. We see a change in behavior where they begin to influence their communities more,” explained the Guatemalan scientist.

Arrechea, 36, was born and raised in a rural community in Guatemala and is a chemical engineer and holds a PhD in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
She is also co-founder and director of Global Programs for the socially-focused company ‘New Sun Road Guatemala’, an initiative incubated at the University of California Berkeley, United States.

She has been selected by the Princess of Girona Foundation (Catalonia) for “her contribution to electrification, connectivity and digital literacy for indigenous women in rural communities in Guatemala.
