THE General Chairperson of the NasDem Party, Surya Paloh emphasized the importance of a country upholding the principles of democracy. This statement was delivered in response to the challenges ahead for the Indonesian nation.

“The homework is very big. However, building public awareness is something we really need to be able to be present and understand the consequences that must be played as citizens. This country is a democratic country,” said Surya at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday (16/8).

According to Surya, the implementation of democracy is not enough just by providing rights and freedoms to every citizen, but also requires a balance that is built together.

“It is not enough to stop at freedom. We certainly hope, and indeed it should be, that citizens must also include their obligations. There must be a balance between rights and obligations. Otherwise, it will be difficult for us to rise,” he said.

In addition, the public must also build social behavior by having a high ethos in order to compete with other more advanced countries.

“Honestly, I have to say. Our challenge is how to also build our social behavior attitudes, greater national discipline, and higher ethos. Otherwise, we will find it difficult to compete with other nations,” he said.

Surya emphasized that democracy must not die and must be maintained together.

“Yes, that is our hope, democracy must not die. We understand that we are still consistent. This country adheres to a democratic system. There is freedom to express opinions, associate, and so on. That is what we must maintain together. Today, perhaps the line-up is not quite right, tomorrow we will arrange it again so that it is more fitting. That is what democracy is all about,” he said.
