Survivor has great plot and poor performance [Review]

Star Wars Jedi Survivor faced many optimization issues at its launch, which made the period troubled and ended up having a very negative impact. Now, the situation on the PlayStation 5 is still problematic and the performance leaves something to be desired, but this fact does not completely take away the shine of the game.

Yes, the performance greatly hinders the experience, but there is still enough quality to please the player, especially if you are a big fan of the saga created by George Lucas. The continuation of Cal Kestis’ journey raises the bar on the narrative and maintains the quality previously seen in other elements.

Cal Kestis returns

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order delivered a well-written plot in the universe of the saga, utilizing Star Wars lore well to offer a new canonical story of respect. If the plot of the previous game was already one of the most interesting in the franchise, Jedi: Survivor manages to overcome it.

With the return of Cal Kestis, protagonist of the first title, we see the most mature and experienced character, still in his fight once morest the Empire while he must survive in the galaxy. The title quickly shows us that the team formed in the previous game broke up for different reasons, and now Cal faces his challenges accompanied by another crew.

In the same way that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is quick to let us know how much things have changed, the game is also quick to forward the return of familiar characters, even if now the union between our heroes is a little different, with each character presenting different responsibilities and desires.

Great use of Star Wars lore

One of the great strengths of Respawn Entertainment is to dive headlong into Star Wars lore, using elements that not even the movies usually show fans. Jedi: Survivor is brave enough to explore a very interesting period of the saga, but little used in media such as games and cinema.

No spoilers so as not to compromise the experience, just know that it uses a very solid explanation to put a character from another era in Cal’s path, which opens up many possibilities to delve even deeper into the lore.

In addition, Respawn shows that it has a great knowledge of the saga and also makes it clear how much it knows how to use it. There were certainly many conversations with Disney to find out what might be kept and what should be cut from the plot, and fortunately the end result is a very dense and deep plot, which takes advantage of several elements of the saga.

With that, Respawn had a clear path to deliver a plot with a great plot-twist and several outstanding moments. Cal’s development takes on even more weight and layers, with Jedi: Survivor offering one of the most interesting and captivating journeys yet seen in Star Wars.

Excellent level design

The level design is another of the game’s great successes, and much of that is due to the fact that the title makes excellent use of skills and strength. What we saw in the previous game is expanded upon here. You still need to use Cal’s strength and other moves to progress through different scenarios and solve puzzles, while the new gameplay and mechanics are enough to give the player a good feeling of freshness.

As the game retains the skills and techniques that Cal learned in the previous game, the character is already more agile and can perform more moves from the first minute of the game, however, the game still has many roguelite elements and you keep noticing that new paths and new possibilities arise every time you go through an environment once more.

Jedi: Survivor also introduces some mechanics right away that end up making Cal’s movement even more complete and easier, but knows how to reserve some elements for other moments in the game, which allows the journey to always be accompanied by new possibilities that do not open up space for a sense of repetition.

Advancing through scenarios by climbing, jumping and using the force is extremely fun, and in many of these moments they end up being even more interesting than the combat of the title. The mechanics are pleasurable and make advancing through each environment a captivating experience.

Combat and boss battles

The combat of Jedi: Survivor follows the same structure as its predecessor, being quite cinematic. Cal’s lightsaber moves are beautiful with great slash animations, which makes clashes fun and visually interesting.

Now, the possibility of changing Cal’s stances makes combat even more varied, as using the different types of saber really changes the gameplay. In fact, each stance has its own skill tree. Changing postures is not just a decoration, as the player really feels the differences when facing enemies by switching between fighting styles.

Something that disappoints is that, while combat once morest common enemies is pleasant, the game’s boss battles leave a lot to be desired. With the exception of one showdown once morest a very appealing character, all boss fights end up being pretty forgettable and rather bland. This seems to be the only point where the game seems to have let the level drop compared to the previous title. Whether due to the moveset of opponents or even the challenge of confrontations, boss battles lack luster.

Poor performance on PlayStation 5

Another negative point is the poor performance of the game on the PlayStation 5, which ends up negatively affecting the experience. Many of the cutscenes suffer terrible fps drops, which takes away from the impact of important scenes in the game. In addition, the fps also drops a lot in gameplay, and in many moments it borders on something almost unplayable for a few moments. The fps drops, whether big or small, are constant and certainly annoy the player.

Verdict

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a great journey, especially for fans of the franchise. Performance problems are indeed a big stumbling block to the title, but luckily that can be overcome with the quality found here.

With an excellent plot, which is among the best in the saga, the title offers a definitive and captivating experience for anyone who is passionate regarding the universe created by George Lucas.
