On the day of the terrorist massacre, these terrible images also went around the world: Hamas terrorists kidnapped an 85-year-old woman from her home in Kibbutz Nir Oz during their invasion of Israel (approx. 1,200 dead) amid cheers of “Allahu Abkbar”.

It was Yaffa Adar (85). She survived being held hostage despite heart and kidney problems and was released after 49 days of Hamas violence – in exchange for Palestinian criminals from Israeli prisons.

What was noticeable when she was kidnapped was that Yaffa was smiling victoriously in the midst of the armed men. She seemed almost unfazed by the chaos – as if she didn’t care that she was kidnapped. Many observers suspected that she was demented due to her old age and was not fully aware of her situation.

But it was not like that!

She spoke to Israeli television for the first time since her release – and touched the nation as an example of inner strength and resilience.

“I decided not to give them the pleasure of seeing me afraid,” Adar told Israeli broadcaster Channel 12.

Basically, there was no reason to be happy, she says – quite the opposite: “They threw me (into the golf cart), there were a lot of people around us, and these crowds were spitting on me and screaming. “It wasn’t pleasant,” she said.

“As I sat there, I thought to myself: I’m not going to let them destroy me. I want my children to be proud of me. To say that I wasn’t afraid? I think I was scared. But to be honest – I wasn’t afraid.” ! I do not know why.”

“She is the glue of our family. She loves her life,” granddaughter Adva Adar said of her grandmother while she was still kidnapped. “She liked good food and good wine. She was very young-spirited.”

Yaffa Adar’s eventful life is closely interwoven with the history of Israel.

She was one of the few children who survived the Warsaw Ghetto, the collection camp for Jews in occupied Poland that the Nazis eventually burned to the ground. In Israel, she co-founded Kibbutz Nir Oz – a left-wing village that advocated for peace with the Palestinians – and which Hamas terrorists destroyed in their massacre.

She is a mother of three, a grandmother of eight and a great-grandmother of seven. One of her sons is Yuval Biton – the prison doctor who treated Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar (61) and knows him like no other!

The kidnapping drama is not yet over for Yaffa: one of her grandchildren, Tamir Adar, was also kidnapped by the terrorists on the terrible October 7th. He is among around 135 hostages who are still held by Hamas.
