Young Lindsay Barr Grenton was not expecting to hear this news. She was expecting her second child a few weeks later when she faced a diagnosis that turned her life upside down. She had to face a malignant stage 4 disease growing inside her just as her second child was growing.
At 36 weeks, Lindsay went to her doctor following a burning lump appeared in her breast. But just one week following her visit, she discovered the unthinkable: she had stage 4 breast cancer, and doctors told her she would only live for 6 months.
“I went in there and thought my duct was clogged or I had mastitis, but I wasn’t complaining of anything else,” she tells People magazine.
At her request, Lindsay performed an ultrasound. “I saved my life just by asking for this without even knowing it,” she says. A week following the examination, she received a call saying that the mass was most likely cancer.
She remembers those moments well: “I was very afraid. It was a very emotional stage. I was pregnant with my second child, and I had miscarried before that, so I was waiting for her with great patience and love.”
Lindsay received one blow following another. After the biopsy, the shocking result came: “I learned that I had an aggressive, aggressive cancer. I had two cancerous lumps in my breast and a lot of lymph nodes under my armpit.” Everyone was shocked and no one believed the news, especially since I have no family history of breast cancer, whether from my mother’s family or my father’s family. So it was a real shock.”
As a result of this reality, it was decided that Lindsay would give birth to her baby girl at 37 weeks so that she might quickly begin receiving her treatment.
She talks regarding those critical moments that almost cost her her life, “I started bleeding heavily. I was suffering from large blood clots. The doctors were very worried. They were putting towels under me because I was losing a lot of blood. They did not know whether I would have to undergo an emergency cesarean section or not.” “.
Lindsey had a different opinion: She refused to have a C-section because it would delay her chemotherapy. She continues: “I wanted to recover quickly so that I might start my chemotherapy as soon as possible. Fortunately, my baby came out, but her heartbeat kept dropping, which was scary. But following I was born, the bleeding miraculously stopped.”
One week following giving birth to her baby girl, Lindsey began chemotherapy, which she described as “pretty devastating.” After her PET scan, she was told she only had 6 months to live. As the cancer spread and she had more than a dozen tumors in her liver, “I received nothing but bad news day following day.”
However, Lindsay refused to give up. Every 3 weeks she went to the hospital to get her injection, and had to sit for 3 hours to receive her medications including chemotherapy and immunotherapy drugs.
“It’s been difficult,” Lindsay explains. “My husband helped me a lot. He works from home, and he was able to help a lot, as well as my parents and his parents.”
During six months of treatment, Lindsay spent time with her family. “I was living every moment, because I didn’t have a lot of time to live,” she said. “So I was seizing every second and trying to absorb it. I was trying to do what I might. I filmed a lot of videos and wrote letters to my children.” .
During her treatment journey, tests and results showed that the tumors were shrinking. She does not hide her happiness, “I knew this was good news, but I did not know how long this treatment would continue to give positive results. After the chemotherapy ended, I was happy when I learned that everything had disappeared. The examination showed the absence of any mass or tumor, there was nothing left at all.” “.
It was a real joy when Lindsay learned that the cancer was gone from her body. It’s hard to believe. It was surreal and almost crazy, but it actually happened.
A year and a half following her cancer diagnosis, Lindsay feels healthy, even better than she did before she found out regarding her cancer.
“I try to live in the present and enjoy every moment and not live obsessed with the past,” she told People magazine. She celebrated her thirtieth anniversary and also celebrated her baby Savannah’s first birthday. “I never thought I would be with my family to celebrate, so I feel like every moment is important to me.”
She wanted to share her story with the aim of raising awareness because, in her opinion, “many people think that breast cancer occurs following the age of forty, and they do not expect it to occur at the age of twenty, for example, and here lies the importance of self-examination, periodic monitoring, and consulting a doctor when seeing anything unusual.”
