Surviving Bone Tuberculosis: A Story of Recovery and Resilience

The damage turned into complications: a tuberculosis bacillus got into the fracture site in the spine, bone tuberculosis began to develop, and the vertebrae collapsed. At the hospital, the first thing Natalya was asked was whether she was taking therapy.

– I said no. The doctor said: “Very bad. Because your immunity is zero – it’s weakened to such an extent that it’s dangerous for you to even undergo surgery,” said the Siberian woman. “He says: “I’ll take you.” Let your mother go now to get some pills, we will try to boost your immunity, so that you can at least endure anesthesia, so that you gain weight. When you are more or less stronger, I will perform the operation. But the result will depend 50/50: on my part, 50% is that you get up, the other 50% depends on you, as you want.”

It took 3 months to recover before the surgery. The woman no longer had any doubts that she would get up, but she had to take therapy and gain weight. The bone for the vertebra was taken from the hip. After the operation, it was impossible to move for another 3 months so that the implant was overgrown with tissue and fixed. Then they began to slowly lift Natalya. The first time she tried to stand for a minute – it seemed like an eternity to her, and the woman lost consciousness: she remembers that she might not focus, did not understand where the floor was and where the ceiling was. The next day she tried standing for three minutes, then five. Then I started using crutches more and began to orient myself in space and walk little by little.
