How long can humans survive in an underground cave with no people or sunlight?

In an experiment conducted to find an answer to this, a woman who endured alone in a cave 70 meters below ground for 500 days is a hot topic.

According to the British Daily Guardian on the 14th (local time), Beatrice Flamini (50), a Spanish climber, descended into a 70m underground cave in southern Granada on November 20, 2021, and came up to the ground following 500 days.

Flamini lived alone in an underground cave for 500 days without contact with any civilization except for a little light such as a helmet light, books, paper and pencil, and knitting.

A research team of scientists from the universities of Almeria, Granada, and Murcia in Spain tracked him down and checked how the human body and mind were affected in extreme isolation.

Researchers often checked Flamini’s condition with a specially designed messaging technology, and ingredients were periodically delivered to Flamini, but there was no conversation.

There was a ‘panic button’ prepared in case of emergency, but Flamini did not press it and filled all the promised 500 days.

Major media reported that it appears to be the record for the longest time a human spent alone in a cave, but it is unclear whether such an entry exists in the Guinness World Records.

At a press conference following coming out of the cave, Flamini said, “I got along very well with myself. It’s true that there were difficult moments, but there were also very beautiful moments.”

It is said that he deliberately spent time in the cave reading 60 books, writing, painting, and knitting.

Flamini said, “The secret was to live in the moment that was right now,” and said that he tried to concentrate on an act without thinking regarding it.

He often talked to himself, but never out loud.

From the 65th day, I lost my sense of how time passed. When he came out of the cave, he said he thought it would have been 160 to 170 days.

“When people came down and said we had to leave the cave, I thought something was going on outside,” he explained.

The most difficult moment was when the flies swarmed.

He confessed, “Flies came in and gave birth to larvae.

The toilet problem was dealt with by dumping the toilet in a designated area, but there was no shower. “I still haven’t showered,” Flamini said. “But I’m an extreme sports athlete. I think I can last another 500 days.”

Although the chicken with potatoes drove him crazy, Flamini had perfectly adapted to life in the cave. When the research team came to pick him up following the experiment, they said, ‘Already? Nonsense. He even thought, ‘He hasn’t finished the book yet.

When asked if he had any intention of giving up, he said, “Actually, I didn’t want to leave.”

Wearing sunglasses to protect her eyesight from the sunlight she faces following 500 days, Flamini put on a happy expression on her face.

He said, “I had a dream, how would it feel if I realized that dream?”
