Two new parliamentary investigative committees will begin conducting interviews in March. It starts next week with the Covid financing agency COFAG set up by the SPÖ and FPÖ. The first person to provide information on Wednesday is the head of the Financial Procuratorate, Wolfgang Peschorn. The opposition is particularly interested in funding for so-called “billionaires”, such as investor Rene Benko, who plans to testify in April.

After Peschorn, an employee of the Ministry of Finance is scheduled to answer MPs’ questions on Wednesday. On Thursday we continue with other active or former finance employees, and in the followingnoon Marc Schimpel, Managing Director of COFAG, is invited himself. This time the surveys are organized much more tightly than in the last U-committees. This means that the political groups have far less question time.

The following week, on March 13th and 14th, the committee on the “Red-Blue Abuse of Power”, which is supported by the People’s Party alone, will begin, which will examine the government participation of the SPÖ and FPÖ in the period from January 11th, 2007 to January 7th, 2020 Lupe wants to take a look at the first witnesses. Subsequently, changes are made on a weekly basis. Both investigative committees each consist of 13 members excluding the chairman.

In accordance with the rules of procedure, National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) chairs both U-committees. He can be represented by the Second President of the National Council Doris Bures (SPÖ) or the Third President of the National Council Norbert Hofer (FPÖ). If all three are unable to attend, certain MPs can preside over the meeting.

Christa Edwards from the Vienna Higher Regional Court will be the procedural judge in both U-Committees, who has already served as deputy procedural judge in the ÖVP Corruption U-Committee. She has juvenile judge Beate Matschnig as her deputy on the “COFAG Committee” and administrative judge Wolfgang Köller on the “Red-Blue Abuse of Power” committee.
