Evening (owl) people have a 9% higher risk of dying early than morning people (larks), most likely due to alcohol and tobacco, a new study has found.

A research team at the University of Helsinki in Finland found this following studying 22,000 twins over 37 years.

The research team said, “The fact that the evening type did not fall asleep until late at night had no effect on lifespan.”

The research team followed 22,976 men and women (average age 24 years old) from 1981 to 2018 in a Finnish twin cohort (same group) study. The research team initially asked participants whether they were morning or evening types.

Participants answered one of four types: a definite morning type (6769 people), some morning type (6354 people), a certain evening type (2262 people), and a certain evening type (7591 people). 8728 of the participants had died by 2018.

The study found that evening types had a 9% higher risk of dying early from any cause than morning types. Smoking and alcohol consumption were also found to be the main causes of a high risk of dying prematurely. In addition to alcoholism, other causes of death due to drinking included related diseases. In particular, the type itself, such as morning type and evening type, was found to have little or no effect on mortality. This was supported by the fact that non-smokers and evening types did not have a high risk of premature death.

There is growing evidence that sleep duration, sleep quality, and night shift work affect health. Previous research results (UK Biobank, 2018) showed that night-type people have a slightly higher risk of developing diseases such as heart disease than morning-type people. Evening people smoke and drink more than morning people. Certain nighters were less likely to report getting eight hours of sleep.

The results of this study (Chronotype and mortality – a 37-year follow-up study in Finnish adults) were published in the journal Chronobiology International.
