After a long day of elections in Argentina and more than four hours of vote counting, the electoral authorities announced the results for the presidential elections with a surprising twist at the last minute. The candidate Javier Milei was surpassed by the candidate Sergio Massa with an advantage.

With 76% of the votes counted, the authorities reported that Massa obtained 35.9% of the ballots, while Milei was left with only 30.5%. As it is, both are going to a runoff on November 19 to find out the absolute winner.

On this first day, no candidate obtained the necessary votes to win in the first round, since in Argentina it is necessary that they obtain 45% or 40% of the votes with a minimum difference of 10 percentage points.

However, the news of a second round was not surprising, since from early on there was talk of going to an upcoming electoral contest in that country. Even the Libertad Avanza party had already ruled out victory in the first round.

“No one thinks about winning in the first round, we all always thought that there would be a second electoral round. Let’s wait for the result of the vote,” said Guillermo Francos, official spokesman for Milei’s party.

Even so, in the primary elections in Argentina, the PASO, Javier Milei was the winning candidate and obtained the majority of the votes with 29.8%.

In second place was Massa with 27.2% of the votes. However, that projection was not enough. Milei was not enough in the first lap and Massa climbed to first place for the second lap.
