Scientists are surprised: this time of sleep turns out to cause an incurable disease

Sleep lovers were urged to think regarding their health.

Long sleep duration may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, as can sleep deprivation, regardless of lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors. This is evidenced by the analysis of Dutch researchers, writes the journal Nature Medicine. The scientific experiments used data on 5,560 participants aged 40-75 years over an eight-year period.

Sleep duration was assessed as time in bed in minutes using data from an accelerometer worn on the hip for 7 nights.

Glucose metabolism was determined according to the World Health Organization diagnostic criteria. It turned out that with a sleep duration of 12 hours, the odds ratio for type 2 diabetes is much higher than with a sleep duration of 5 and 8 hours.

Scientists have concluded that there is a U-shaped relationship between long sleep and type 2 diabetes. These findings support the importance of promoting healthy sleep habits, but in a way that avoids oversleeping, the scientists said.
