Surprising Growth: Cuban MSMEs Triple Sales in First Half of 2023

The National Office of Statistics and Information (Onei) of Cuba offered surprising data on Micro, small and medium-sized companies (Mipymes). These private businesses tripled their sales from January to June of the current year. Onei’s analysis reflects that the sale of products and services in the first semester amounts to $132,575 million pesos. This figure includes all operations in the country and is equivalent to $5,524 million dollars according to the exchange rate established by the government.

The result obtained in the first half of this year represents a 26% growth compared to the same period in 2022. MSMEs became the driving force behind an economic increase in the nation.

Private companies are 4.1% of all commercial establishments on the Island. While the national production of goods and services remains detained due to the economic crisis and the scarcity of public resources.

The sale of articles generated $57,599 million pesos, which means 14.4% above the previous year. Services contributed $45.7 billion pesos with an increase of 23.7% compared to 2022.

The superior growth was evidenced by gastronomy with 206.8%, this sector is the one with the greatest presence of MSMEs. State and private companies exchange potentialities, because private gastronomy had an influence with 49.69% and the government one reported 22.08%.

State services contributed 34.47% and private services only participated in 5.25%. Retail trade was balanced, since entrepreneurs accounted for 45.06% and government institutions registered 43.45%.

Among the difficulties that entrepreneurs face on the island is the foreign exchange market. MSMEs were created in 2021 and have developed in a short time.
