During the presentation of its last budget, the Legault government announced the payment of an amount of $500 to all people aged 18 and over who earn less than $100,000 a year to counter the effects of inflation.
However, many people may be surprised not to see the amount arrive in their bank account since it is a tax credit.
Thus, if when you submit your tax return you have an amount to pay, the 500 dollars will allow you to make this reimbursement.
“We said to our clients: ‘yes, there is a 500 dollars. You qualify, you will have it, provided that you have no debt to the government,'” says the tax specialist, Pierre Montreuil.
“If you owe money to the government, if your tax isn’t paid from last year, you won’t get it. They will apply it to the debt.”
Finance Minister Eric Girard had mentioned that for anyone who filed their return on time, the amount would be returned by mid-May.
“Revenu Quebec controls everything. Neither you nor your accountant can change it. It is strictly Revenu Québec that does the work,” explains TurboTax Quebec spokesperson François Gagnon.
To file your return, there are some important documents to remember, such as Relevé 31 for tenants, and tuition fees for students.
Since April 30 falls on a Saturday that day, you will have until May 2 to pay any balance owing and thus avoid late payment penalties.
