Surprise: the biggest salary in Ligue 1 is not that of Messi!

Our colleagues from L’Equipe published a major study on Tuesday on the gross salaries of Ligue 1 players, without taking bonuses into account.

And while we expected to see Lionel Messi in the lead, we realize that the Argentinian has to settle for second place with €3,375,000 gross per month. Mbappé, who has not renegotiated his contract recently, is third with €2,220,000. The one who sits at the top of this ranking is the last member of the MNM, the one whose performances have been the most disappointing in recent months: Neymar. The Brazilian receives a gross salary of €4,083,000 every month. Or a net salary of € 1,729,150, according to the estimates of our colleagues from L’Equipe. Not to mention the bonuses, then. Quite comfortable…

Note that PSG squats the first 14 places in this ranking (Marquinhos and Verratti complete the top 5, Hakimi and Navas also enjoy gross salaries in excess of one million euros). And that Messi receives more bonuses (loyalty, in particular) than Neymar, which allows him to compete with the Brazilian in terms of net income. Wissam Ben Yedder, who plays under the orders of Philippe Clement in Monaco, is the first non-Parisian, in 15th position: he costs his club €650,000 per month, excluding bonuses.

Messi made concessions and brought in sponsors

L’Equipe recalls that Lionel Messi received a much bigger jackpot in Barcelona: around 61 million euros a year. It is now at just over 30 million euros net in Paris, all inclusive. Part of which is paid to him in “PSG Fan Tokens”, the club’s cryptocurrency. And, above all, the Argentinian has allowed his club to sign new sponsorship contracts, at increased prices.

On the Belgian side, it should be noted that the gross monthly income of Jason Denayer (Lyon) is estimated at 260,000 euros, while Jérémy Doku (Rennes) receives 120,000 euros, Matz Sels (Strasbourg) 100,000€, Thomas Foket (Reims) 60,000€ and Wout Faes (Reims also) €40,000. Amadou Onana is not in Lille’s ten highest salaries, so he receives less than €80,000 gross.
