Surge in Dengue Cases in Singapore Sparks Concern as DENV-1 Takes Hold: Updates from NEA

A Singapore, more than 6,200 cases of dengue have been reported as of September 5, 2023, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA). As of September 5, 2023, there were 48 outbreaks of dengue, including 13 outbreaks of at least 10 cases of dengue.

Authorities say there is a risk of an increase in dengue cases as dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) becomes predominant, in a context where the number of weekly dengue cases is high, where several outbreaks of dengue fever are identified, and where populations of Aedes mosquitoes are numerous in many places.

Over the past two months, the NEA has seen an increase in the number of cases of DENV-1, which has replaced the previously dominant dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV-3). In July, the monthly proportion of DENV-1 cases was approximately 55%, almost triple the proportion of DENV-3 cases (17%). The increase in the proportion of a previously less common dengue virus serotype is concerning, as it has consistently been associated with an increase in the number of dengue cases a few months later.
