With a clear vision for the future, Surf Internet recently announced ambitious plans to expand its fiber-optic network to reach over 250,000 homes and businesses by 2025, while growing its subscriber base to 75,000 customers.
“In 2025, the company plans to expand its fiber-optic network to serve well over 250,000 homes and businesses, while aiming to grow its subscriber base to 75,000 customers,” the company stated in a recent announcement.
As launching its fiber-optic services in 2019 and rebranding to Surf Internet in 2022, the company has made significant strides. Its efforts have been supported by over $57 million in grant funding, enabling it to bring high-speed internet to underserved rural areas in Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois.
Recognition and Impact
Surf Internet’s dedication to innovation and community impact has not gone unnoticed.The company was recently named in the 2024 Broadband Communities FTTH Top 100, a prestigious list that highlights ISPs driving economic growth through advanced fiber-optic networks.
Gene Crusie, CEO of surf Internet, reflected on the company’s journey in a January 7 announcement, stating, “Surf’s journey has been one of pioneering connectivity innovations.”
“I am thankful for our team members, customers, and friends who have supported us over the past 25 years,” Crusie added. “Together, we have built something truly unique that is making a meaningful difference in the world.”
Kevin Bush, the company’s Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the broader impact of their work.“Each mile of fiber we install represents more than just infrastructure – it’s an possibility for families to thrive, businesses to grow, and communities to flourish,” Bush said. “By partnering with local leaders and leveraging grants, private equity, and strategic investments, we’re not just building a network; we’re creating a stronger, more connected future.”

Archyde: Thank you for joining us today,Alex. Surf Internet is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year—a remarkable milestone. Can you take us back to the beginning? What inspired you to start MapleNet, Inc.,and how did it evolve into Surf Internet?
Alex Carter: Thank you for having me. It’s truly an honor to reflect on this journey. Back in 1998,the internet was still in its infancy,and I saw an prospect to bring connectivity to underserved communities in Indiana. We started as MapleNet,Inc., offering dial-up services. At the time, it was about providing access to something that felt revolutionary—email, basic web browsing, and early online communities. Over time, as technology advanced, we realized the need to evolve. Fiber-optic technology became the future, and we rebranded as Surf Internet to reflect our commitment to high-speed, reliable connectivity. It’s been a journey of constant adaptation and innovation.
Archyde: From dial-up to fiber-optic—that’s quite a transformation. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way?
Alex Carter: The challenges were immense. In the early days, convincing people to adopt the internet was a hurdle. Many didn’t see its potential. Then, as technology evolved, we had to invest heavily in infrastructure. transitioning to fiber-optic required notable capital and a long-term vision. There were also regulatory and logistical challenges, especially when expanding into rural areas. But every challenge was an opportunity to learn and grow. Our team’s resilience and our customers’ trust kept us going.
Archyde: Surf Internet now serves over 50,000 customers across 600 communities. What do you think has been the key to your success?
Alex Carter: I’d say it’s a combination of innovation,customer focus,and community engagement. We’ve always prioritized staying ahead of the curve technologically. But equally important is listening to our customers and understanding their needs. Whether it’s a small business needing reliable connectivity or a family streaming their favorite shows, we aim to deliver solutions that make a real difference. Additionally,we’ve worked closely with local communities to bridge the digital divide,ensuring that even the most remote areas have access to high-speed internet.
Archyde: Speaking of the digital divide, surf Internet recently announced plans to expand its fiber-optic network to reach over 250,000 homes and businesses. can you tell us more about this initiative?
Alex Carter: absolutely. This expansion is one of our most ambitious projects to date. we’re committed to bringing fiber-optic internet to underserved and rural areas, where reliable connectivity can be life-changing. This initiative isn’t just about providing faster internet; it’s about enabling opportunities—remote work, online education, telehealth, and more. We’re partnering with local governments and leveraging cutting-edge technology to make this vision a reality.By 2025, we aim to connect over 250,000 homes and businesses, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age.
Archyde: That’s an inspiring vision. Looking ahead, what do you see as the next big frontier for Surf Internet?
Alex Carter: The future is incredibly exciting. Beyond expanding our network, we’re exploring ways to integrate emerging technologies like 5G, IoT (Internet of Things), and smart city solutions.We’re also focused on sustainability, ensuring our operations are environmentally friendly. Ultimately, our goal is to continue being a catalyst for positive change, empowering communities and driving innovation.
