New Delhi: The student union protested the appointment of actor and former Rajya Sabha member Suresh Gopi as the chairman of the Satyajit Rai Institute of Film and Television. In a statement, the students’ union said it was concerned that having a person working closely with a political party in such a high position might compromise the impartiality and artistic freedom that the institution upholds.

The union stated that the Satyajit Rai Film Institute has a 25-year legacy and is concerned regarding appointing a BJP leader who is close to Hindutva political ideology as its chairman. Suresh Gopi has made statements that threaten secularism in the country. The statement said there was concern that having such a person in such a high position might compromise the impartiality and artistic freedom that the institution upholds. The union added that it was concerned that Suresh Gopi’s appointment would tarnish the reputation of the institution.

At the same time, there are indications that Suresh Gopi may not take the post of president of Satyajit Rai Film Institute. Sources close to him say that Suresh Gopi is angry that the party central leadership was not informed in advance regarding the appointment. Suresh Gopi has not directly responded to the incident.

Last day, the central government announced that Suresh Gopi has been appointed as the chairman of the Satyajit Rai Institute of Film and Television. This was announced by Union Minister Anurag Thakur. Anurag Thakur informed that Suresh Gopi will also hold the charge of Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute.
