THE MOVING of the 2024 National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) from North Sumatra to Surakarta, Central Java, was carried out after considering the readiness of facilities and infrastructure.

This was conveyed by the Assistant Deputy for Standardization, Accreditation, Certification, Infrastructure and Sports Facilities of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Anwar, in a press conference held at the Media Center, The Royal Surakarta Heritage Hotel, Solo, Central Java, Tuesday (8/10).

Anwar explained that obstacles in North Sumatra were the main reason for moving the location. Even though North Sumatra was initially appointed, Solo’s readiness was deemed more adequate to support the holding of the national Paralympic event.

“Usually, Peparnas is always held at the same time as PON, but because North Sumatra’s readiness is not possible, Solo is a more feasible choice. “The infrastructure in Solo is ready to support the implementation of Peparnas,” said Anwar.

The General Chair of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC), Senny Marbun, also conveyed a similar thing, that initially the 2024 Peparnas was planned to take place in North Sumatra, but due to various obstacles. The Ministry of Youth and Sports decided to move him to Surakarta.

According to him, this decision also received full support from the Mayor of Solo, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who was still in office at that time.

“The Minister (Menpora Dito Ariotedjo) is confident with this transfer, because Surakarta has experience, and I am sure that the implementation of Peparnas will run smoothly. All facilities are ready,” he said.

Secretary General of the ASEAN Para Sport Federation (APSF), Wandee Tosuwan, appreciated the improvement in sports facilities in Indonesia, especially in Solo, which has experienced significant development in the last two years.

Wandee stated that these changes showed Indonesia’s readiness to hold major sporting events in the future.

“I visited Indonesia two years ago, and this time I saw very drastic changes in terms of improving facilities, especially in Solo. “The hope is that with this continued improvement in readiness and facilities, Indonesia can hold more international events in the future,” said Wandee.
