The Supreme Court of Justice lifted the measure today precautionary to which he had made room and with which he suspended the governor and vice elections in Tucuman, originally scheduled for last Sunday. Thus, the highest court authorized the elections in that province following the president Juan Manzur decided not to compete and let Miguel Acevedo as vice candidate for Osvaldo Jaldo. The election might be called for June 11, according to what they told THE NATION sources of the Electoral Board of the province.

“Given the resignation of the contested candidacy -accepted by the Provincial Electoral Board- corresponds accept the lifting request carried out by the province of Tucumán. Therefore it is resolved to order the lifting of the suspension of the election for governor and lieutenant governor of the province of Tucumán”, specified the document that reflects the decision of the Court, which intervened since it considered that Manzur’s candidacy might be contrary to the periodicity in functions required by the republican form of government established by the National Constitution and that the provinces must respect. Manzur is governor [cumple su segundo mandato consecutivos] and, immediately before, he was lieutenant governor on two occasions together with José Alperovich

The Court also indicated today that the purpose of suspending the elections last week was to ensure compliance with a final sentence -which has now been ruled out- within the framework of the representative and republican system “that the provinces promised to guarantee.”

“Given the imminence of the scheduled date for the elections, the court considered that the danger that would have caused the delay in issuing the requested measure, as it was evident that carrying out an electoral act that included a problematic candidacy in line with the indicated Republican guideline might produce a institutional disorder difficult to repair”, argued the judges Horace Rosatti, Juan Carlos Maqueda y Carlos Rosenkrantz.

Now, in Tucumán, a date to choose in all categories, since complete voting had been suspended in that territory. On Friday, when there was a mobilization to present the new formula, Manzur announced that, if the highest court allowed it, the elections would be held the first half of June. The Tucumán government reported that the elections would be the 11th of next monthwhile in the opposition the pressure grows for them to do the last weekend of augustfollowing the PASO at the national level, which are 13.

To save costs, the Tucumán Electoral Board might arrange for opposition parties to compete with the same ballots they had planned for May 14. While the PJ must print new tickets before the departure of Manzur.

Manzur’s candidacy had been challenged by Juntos por el Cambio (JXC), which claimed that it did not adhere to the provincial Constitution. In April, the mayor of San Miguel de Tucumán and candidate for lieutenant governor of that force, German Alfaro, was the one who sent an appeal for amparo once morest the current president to the highest court. There was also another presentation by the CREO party, an ally of JXC.

After evaluating the presentation, the Court decided to suspend the elections for governor and vice president in Tucumán. The Supreme Court now had to evaluate the underlying issue, but since Manzur lowered his candidacy, this analysis was without effect, as they explained in the ruling this followingnoon.

The same did not happen in San Juan, the other province where the highest court ordered to pause last Sunday’s elections. It is that there the current president Sergio Unac keep your application. Since he has already made the reply to the Supreme Court through the State Attorney, he awaits a definition regarding whether or not he will be able to go for the fourth term.

Despite the fact that he complied with the measure, the San Juan governor maintained from the beginning of this conflict a confrontational position towards the judges and even suggested their possible complicity with representatives of Pro such as Patricia Bullrich or Miguel Pichetto. In that territory, last weekend they elected the same legislative positions and mayors, but they await what will happen with Uñac.
