Supporting Patients’ Home Care Needs During Summer: Ensuring Safe and Hassle-free Holidays

Throughout the year, the PSADs meet the home care needs of 3.5 million French people: home care for the elderly, chronic illness, end of life, etc. But above all, they support millions of French people every day. of all ages and walks of life who need medical devices to live.

Sleep apnea, diabetes, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, respiratory failure… The people concerned use medical devices on a daily basis, sometimes very complex or very specific, which require support and regular maintenance, but also associated medications. These people also have the right to rest and holidays.

However, what happens to these patients during the summer period? What to do in the event of a breakdown of a medical device in the middle of August at the other end of the country? How to organize your holidays when you have a chronic illness?

While hospital services are threatened with closure for lack of staff, the 35,000 employees, 16% of whom are health professionals (pharmacists, nurses, dieticians, etc.) of the PSADs, remain mobilized all summer with a minimum service provided to meet the needs: advice and preparations before departure, rental of suitable short-term equipment at the vacation spot, assistance and repairs in the event of a problem with a medical device, but also training in the specificities of each device for relay persons.

« The health services, materials and medical devices that we provide to patients are essential to them, often urgent, sometimes vital. We cannot afford to interrupt these services during the summer, so we are committed to making life easier for people who need us, even if they are only passing through our area. explains Didier Daoulas – President of Upsadi.

And to clarify: in all seasons and without restriction, we will carry out our missions and continue our role in the continuity of care so that patients have the best holidays, in complete safety and with complete confidence! The idea is to reproduce the medicalized environment of the house on his vacation spot ».

Going on vacation while undergoing long-term treatment requiring regular logistics can represent a real obstacle course for people:
– difficulty in finding available and trained professionals to monitor treatment compliance
– fear of suffering a breakdown at his vacation spot,
– difficulty in finding the consumables essential to the medical device
– lack of information on the precautions to be taken for the transport or storage of associated drugs
– impossibility of transporting all the necessary medical equipment

Through their presence throughout the national territory and the good cooperation between all the local or national actors, the PSADs provide support for all patients, including holidaymakers, and provide a wide variety of missions, essential for the people following a treatment :

Before leaving
– Anticipation and preparation of needs: preparation of essential equipment, advice on the storage and transport of medicines, etc.
For patients undergoing oxygen therapy treatment, for example, the PSADs contact the airline to notify, explain, and ensure that the journey is going as well as possible for the patient!
– Making contact with health professionals at the vacation spot, coordination of necessary care, scheduling of care or drug deliveries.
From identifying health professionals or PSADs available at the vacation spot to making appointments, including logistics and administrative management, the PSADs ensure before departure that each patient can continue and observe their simple and safe treatment!
– Training in the specificities of medical devices for new health professionals who will monitor the patient on site.

In the case of a complex medical device, the PSADs usually following the patients are able to transmit the essential information – remotely or while moving

On the spot
– Short or long-term rental of adapted equipment: installation of medical beds, patient lifts, wheelchair rental, but also logistical and administrative management to simplify the lives of patients!
Second home, seasonal rental or campsite, the PSADs travel all over France to provide patients with the equipment or furniture best suited to their needs.
– On-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: Troubleshooting, maintenance and replacement of medical devices to ensure continuity of treatment

Breakdown ? Forgot part of the medical device at home? On a simple call, the PSADs undertake to find quick and appropriate solutions to all the difficulties encountered by patients on vacation, even if they are usually followed hundreds of kilometers away!

Support for treatment compliance, and coordination with prescribing physicians and health professionals present in summer and winter, the PSADs provide remote monitoring of patients equipped with a continuous positive pressure (CPAP) device, and ensure the adherence to treatment for people affected by sleep apnea

« Every summer, we receive more and more requests from people who come to spend a few days or a few weeks in our region. They need to be reassured, to check that they will be able to enjoy the summer in complete safety, with professionals available if needed: we contact our colleagues, we also find nurses or doctors who can take the relay to take care of patients, and we also respond to all patients who contact us only for the summer explains a member of Upsadi from the South of France.

And to conclude: we obviously accompany them and guarantee them the same quality of services as our usual patients! It seems normal to me to maintain our services and to be available for all those who need them, everywhere and all year round. ».
