Supporting Gaza’s Health System: Crisis, Collapsed Hospitals, and Humanitarian Concerns

A World Health Organization spokeswoman said on Tuesday that more Gazans are at risk of dying from disease than from bombing if the health system in the Strip is not supported to return to normal quickly.

“Ultimately, we will see more people dying from disease than from bombing if we cannot rebuild this health system,” said spokeswoman Margaret Harris.

She described the collapse witnessed by Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza as a “tragedy” and expressed her concern regarding the detention of some of its medical staff by Israeli forces.

Israel had pledged to eliminate Hamas following the attack it launched on October 7, which according to it led to the killing of 1,200 people, the majority of them civilians, and the kidnapping of regarding 240 people who were transported to Gaza.

The Israeli retaliation led to the deaths of regarding 15,000 people in the Gaza Strip, including 6,150 children, according to the Hamas government.
