Supporting Cancer Patients: The Vital Role of Caregivers and Associations

They are often seated by their side during the treatment, they keep the dates of the next medical appointments in their personal notebook. They are there to wipe away the tears and continue to bring smiles to the sick. They are the helpers. Friends, parents, husbands, children, sometimes strangers who will become much more over time.

The new episode, “Aidant, a heart role”offered as part of the web series Corse-Matin : Cancer: seeing beyond the scars, will provide an opportunity to highlight the important role of loved ones in the follow-up and healing of these women who are fighting once morest the disease.

The resource person, the link in the chain

In France, all pathologies and situations combined, more than 8 million people watch over a sick, disabled or dependent person. Spontaneously. Natural. Simply out of love. 90% of these caregivers do not consider themselves as such, underestimating the importance of being at the side of the sick. “ I think that the helper is a real psychological, moral and physical support”, says Dr. Franck Le Duff, director of the regional cancer screening coordination centre. He adds : “He helps the sick person to better understand his disease, he is present in case of a hard blow. He is also there to remind him of what was said during the consultations because he has more hindsight. To this extent, he participates in treating the patient as a resource person.”

A definition which is reminiscent of that shared by Dominique Simeoni. Installed in San Martino di Lota, he faces cancer with his partner. “I attend all the appointments. I intervene and I explain to her as simply as possible to try to reassure her regarding how the operations will go. But that has not changed our way of being in the couple.” And some days, when morale drops, he knows how to remind her, in his own words, sometimes even trivializing the illness, that with or without hair, she is still beautiful and that I love her”.

And when the helper is lacking, the volunteers know how to mobilize. At the Haute-Corse Cancer League, isolated patients are not alone when they sit on the chair to receive their protocol. “We have to be the right shoulder when the need arises. We visit patients in the hospital and sometimes we accompany them for their session”, says Claudie Legay, the president of the departmental branch of the League.

The Belles et battantes association has also played this role for eleven years. to create a rose chain rune during and following illness”. According to Simone Grimaldi, its president, support is essential because women tend to want to protect their family first and to step aside. With this association, on the contrary, they must continue to live by not remaining far from the lights.

Because there is no single support, because the needs differ from one patient to another and because each fight is different, carers and associations seek, on a daily basis, the right words to move forward together. towards healing.

To note :

* It is necessary to be screened from the age of 50, every two years, by a mammogram re-read by another radiologist as part of organized screening. Early detection is recommended for people with cases in their family.

* The Corsicans are not less screened overall even if the figures for organized screening are poor on the island. A situation that can be explained by parallel screening. In Corsica, screening is mainly individual and in the vast majority, women therefore do not benefit from the double reading. There can therefore be a real loss of opportunity.
