Just over two months following the death of the journalist from Quebec newspaper Kathleen Frenette, swept away by breast cancer, her colleague and columnist Karine Gagnon is launching a fundraiser in her honor as part of Québec ville en rose which will be held from 1is to October 31.

It was in July 2018 that cancer came into Kathleen’s life and not just any cancer: triple negative, aggressive and generally unforgiving breast cancer. After a hard fight, Kathleen Frenette, a golden colleague, finally passed away quietly on June 28th.

“She fought very courageously and I wanted to dedicate this campaign to her,” says Karine Gagnon, who is also assistant to the director of information at the Journal of Quebec.

The latter has been involved in this cause that is close to her heart for several years, but this fall’s campaign takes on special meaning. The past year has made her realize that no one is untouchable, as one in eight women is typically diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It’s important to understand that it can happen to anyone. She was a super lively and super dynamic woman who had a hyper colorful language. She’s the kind of person you might have seen live to be 100.”

“I started getting involved because it was a cause that was really close to my heart, but the years will have shown that we all end up knowing someone with breast cancer. That’s why it’s important to do our part for research,” she added, adding that her goal is to raise more than $1,000.

Quebec city in pink

Last year’s Québec ville en rose campaign raised $277,000, a record. Since its inception, the movement has given more than $3 million in donations to the Breast Disease Center of the CHU de Québec-Université Laval.

“It makes it possible to buy state-of-the-art equipment and equipment that it would not be possible to have without fundraising,” explains the president and chief executive officer of the Fondation du CHU de Québec. , Marie-Claude Pare.

From October 1 to 31, Québec will therefore become a city in pink, while the color of the fight once morest breast cancer will illuminate dozens of businesses, sites and monuments.

For a 13th edition, the partners as well as the bearers of light will mobilize to financially support this cause and the 1,200 people who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

“The money that people will give will stay here, in Quebec, and they will be completely used to do good to patients in Quebec and all of eastern Quebec,” she concluded.
