Supporters Rally for Américo De Grazia and Carlos Chancellor Amidst Controversial Accusations

Relatives of Américo De Grazia and Carlos Chancellor, former mayors of municipalities in the state of Bolívar, denied the statements of the Minister of Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, which link both political prisoners with the two detained Spanish citizens.

“There is not much I can say about this, because we are defending my father from a dictatorship. The accusations are obviously false and there is no evidence to prove otherwise,” said María De Grazia, daughter of the political leader, in an interview with Caroni Mail Tuesday, September 17th.

A relative of Carlos Chancellor, who did not reveal his name, denied the accusations and said that they have not been able to see the detained former mayor.

“They won’t let him see us. We have no information. He remains in custody. We have not been able to have contact with him. His brothers have made arrangements there, but we have not been able to see him,” she added in an interview with the regional media.

María De Grazia said that this situation is repeated with her father, because they do not have a “proof of life” since his arrest on August 8. De Grazia’s family learned about his confinement in El Helicoide on August 9.

The accusations

On Saturday, September 14, the Minister of Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, announced the arrest of two Spanish citizens in Puerto Ayacucho, Amazonas state.

According to Cabello, both foreigners would be linked to De Grazia, Chancellor and Vente Venezuela in an alleged plan to assassinate the mayor of the Piar municipality in Bolívar, Yulisbeth García.

“There are direct links with Américo De Grazia and Carlos Chacellor,” the minister said during a press conference.

In addition to his alleged links with Venezuelan political actors, Cabello also asserted that the detained Spaniards belong to the National Intelligence Center (CNI).

On the same day, sources from the Spanish Executive dismissed in an interview with the EFE news agency the alleged links with the CNI of its apprehended citizens in Venezuela.

For its part, the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela asked the government of Nicolás Maduro to have access to two of the detainees.

Health status of both detainees

Relatives of the political leaders expressed their concern over the fact that they are not sure whether Américo De Grazia and Carlos Chacellor are receiving their medical treatments.

The Chancellor family revealed that he suffers from an eye disease linked to retinal degeneration. For this reason, he must undergo monthly treatment and must not experience stressful situations.

“He has to get an injection every month. He has retinal degeneration, he has to get that injection every month to help prevent the blood loss inside his eye from progressing and causing him to lose his sight. The doctor also told him that he should stay away from stress. God forbid, but if his blood pressure goes up, it could get worse,” the relative said. Caroni Mail.

While Maria De Grazia stated that her father suffers from a lung condition and, in addition, she indicated that he must follow a strict diet, because he had a bypass gastric.

“He has a lung infection and has been undergoing treatment since a month before being arrested. He was supposed to do so for 3 to 6 months. It is a treatment that could not be stopped because this would have serious consequences,” he added.
