MEXICO CITY (EFE).— The governors of 22 states and the head of government of Mexico City supported the breaking of diplomatic relations with Ecuador in the face of “the inadmissible invasion” of the Mexican Embassy in Quito to capture former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas and asked for respect for sovereignty and international law.
In a statement, made public in relations with Ecuador.
In their letter, the governors of 22 states and the head of the capital’s government, Martí Batres, considered the entry of Ecuadorian police officers during the night of Friday in an operation to capture Glas to be “inadmissible invasion.”
His detention occurs following the Mexican government granted him asylum, following entering the Mexican Embassy in Quito since December 17, 2023, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico. The above caused the Mexican president to order the immediate breaking of diplomatic relations with the government of Ecuador, which Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcenas announced minutes later, considering that international law and the sovereignty of Mexico were violated.
In this sense, the governors emanating from President López Obrador’s party claimed that the security and respect for the integrity of the embassies and diplomatic missions of Mexico, as well as that of their staff and the people who are in them, must be fully guaranteed by the host countries, as established by the Vienna Convention.
That is why they also asked for respect for international law and the safe and agile return of the Mexican diplomats in Ecuador and who were attacked by the forceful entry of the Ecuadorian Police during the capture of Glas.
