Nearly 400 people, according to the police, gathered on Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. at Place du Luxembourg in Brussels. Organized by the DemoCrisis association and the Secular Jewish Community Center (CCLJ) of Brussels, the action was carried out in support of the Israeli victims of the Hamas attack on October 7, as well as the Israeli hostages currently held by the small group Palestinian army.

If the rally initially aimed to denounce anti-democratic excesses in Israel, Poland and Hungary, and to present the new non-partisan pro-democracy organization “DemoCrisis”, the CCLJ decided to adapt the mobilization to the view of current events. Organizers and demonstrators call on European institutions to do everything in their power to repatriate hostages held in the Gaza Strip.

“What happened in recent days is a crime once morest humanity itself. It has nothing to do with politics or territory, it directly affects human decency,” the president said. of the CCLJ Benjamin Beeckmans. “Tonight, we, the Jewish people, send a message: we proclaim loud and clear that life, love and peace will always triumph over cruelty and violence,” he added.

Some family members of Israeli hostages held by Hamas also took the stage to express their distress, and their determination to free their loved ones. “I pray every second for my grandparents, my cousins, my uncles and aunts currently detained in Gaza. But I am not asking you to share my grief. I call on European representatives to take concrete action to help the release of my family. The question is not ‘if’ you can help me, but ‘when'”, underlined a young woman present.
