Australia: Thousands of people rallied in cities and towns across Australia to support the campaign to recognize the country’s indigenous peoples in the constitution ahead of a referendum later this year.
The proposal, which will be submitted to a referendum between October and December, seeks to bring the people’s voice to Parliament, an advisory body to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a direct say in policies that affect them.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s center-left Labor government supports the change, but the opposition Liberal-National Conservatives have voiced opposition.
According to Yes23, the organization behind more than 25 rallies nationwide, the Sydney rally drew 3,000 people and is expected to grow to 25,000.
