At the end of Friday followingnoon, more than 80 tents were set up on the Flagey square, in front of the Belga terrace. An action carried out by around a hundred people in support of asylum seekers.

During the night, the situation worsened as several people were injured during a fight which took place on Place Flagey. The brawl broke out around 6:30 a.m. this Saturday morning, involving 15 people, reports the Brussels-Ixelles police zone. Six people were injured and taken to hospital, one of them is life-threatening.

An investigation was opened to shed light on the origin of the fight. “This would probably concern the people who remained in the tent camp, but this remains to be confirmed,” Ilse Van de Keerse of the Brussels-Ixelles police zone told Het Nieuwsblad.

On site, the “Stop crisis of reception” collective speaks of people “from outside the camps, drug addicts, who would have tried to come and return business.” Already this Friday, the need to protect the places had been mentioned. Acting mayor Audrey Lhoest (Ecolo) assures that no request has been made. This Saturday morning, the police presence was particularly visible. “Asylum seekers continue to demand that the camp be made secure. This type of violence is the reality of life on the streets. It’s just that here in Flagey it’s more visible.”

Concerning the future of the camp itself, “there is a reprieve until 2 p.m.”, the time at which discussions should resume. Minister Alain Maron (Ecolo) in charge of Social Action at Cocof visited in the morning, “without providing a solution” according to the collective.

The municipality continues to look for a site to accommodate asylum seekers, not necessarily in the municipality of Ixelles, “It is the responsibility of the federal government to remind the acting mayor
