These greedy objects do not digest easily. Explanations.
Outremangeur
The gravitational force of a black hole is such that if a star ventures too close to it, it can meet a disastrous end. Scientists have shown that these supermassive objects sometimes “feed” on stars. The powerful tidal effect literally shreds the star which is swallowed. This is called a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE).
The digestion
In study recently published, researchers claim that these black holes hiccup a few years following the violent event. They burp their feast, sort of. According to the results of this study, regarding 40 percent of the black holes studied that produce tidal rupture events return stellar material a few years later. The material detected might be part of the accretion disk or simply have been ejected by the black hole. Note that these events are not observed visually. They are tracked by radio waves.
