“Supermarket Showdown: Pilsner Beer Edition – Our Consumer Tests and Reviews”

2023-04-29 10:00:00

New episode of our series of consumer tests. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of twenty points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality- price. This week, we tested pilsner beers.

Aspect du packaging : Jupiler is obviously the reference brand for this test, as the favorite brand of Belgians, neck and neck with Côte d’Or. The can is obviously well known, with its characteristic colors and its famous bull. A logo that inspired Aldi’s distributor brand, which features a horse and the words “Belgian beer”. Carrefour bets on a Spanish beer; Lidl, on a German beer, with nice packaging. For Delhaize, it is a simple white product, with no ambition. Finally, Colruyt catches the eye with its famous Carapils.

Product Appearance: For Jupiler, we recognize the typical smell of Belgian pilsner. The foam holds well and it’s sparkling, but not too much. For the Carrefour product, we liked the color of the beer but we regretted the short life of the foam in the glass. The smell was, however, quite correct. It was also not bad for Lidl visually. For Aldi, the smell left something to be desired, although the foam was nice. Same remark for Delhaize. Finally, it was correct at all levels for the Carapils.

Nutritional value : we must not specify that alcohol is not good for health

Label readability: Aldi and Delhaize forgot that a label was needed on a product… For the rest, it was perfectly fine for everyone.

Taste : there was no suspense, Jupiler is unbeatable and has no competition on the low-end pilsner side. In terms of taste, Aldi still defends itself well, even if the overall rating remains below average. For the Carapils, it is paradoxical. If the taste is really very light, it can be drunk and is not unpleasant. Finally not too much. The rest was really bad. Sometimes too sparkling, sometimes too bitter, sometimes too flat, nothing was right.

Value for money: For a 33cl can, Jupiler is obviously the most expensive (€0.99). For the rest, we go from €0.63 (Carrefour) to €0.36 (Colruyt), via €0.38 (Delhaize), €0.55 (Lidl) and €0.45 (Aldi).
